Honda Integra news

Honda has released details of the first machine to be powered by its new twin-cylinder engine, and it’s packed with new technology!

The sporting maxi-scooter, rather oddly called Integra (the same as the company’s compact car), is claimed to be capable of 76mpg (27km/l, 3.7l/100km, 63.5mpg US), which Honda says is around 40 per cent better than current machines from rival manufacturers. These would include Suzuki’s Burgman 650 and the Yamaha T-Max.

The engine is a parallel twin with liquid-cooling designed to produce strong low rev torque with a high fuel efficiency, and is mated to a smaller and lighter version of the Dual Clutch Transmission first seen on the VFR1200F. Other versions of the engine are to be used in future bikes, coupled with manual six-speed transmissions. It seems a conventional variable pulley belt drive was avoided because of its poor efficiency.

Although Honda says it’s 700cc, the engine is a long stroke design with 73 x 80mm dimensions giving a true 670cc. It has a 270-degree crankshaft layout designed, says Honda, to mimic the uneven power pulses of a V-twin to enhance the riding experience. A single balance shaft is fitted to reduce vibration, but Honda says it decided against using two, which would have been smoother still, in order to retain some vibration and imbue the engine with some character.

A single inlet channel branches into two within the cylinder head in order to use pressure pulse harmonics to enhance intake efficiency, while unusually the two cylinders each operate with different intake timing. This also improves efficiency as well as helping the engine to feel good, according to Honda. A single overhead camshaft is used.

The catalyst is positioned right beside the exhaust ports in order to maximise its warm-up time, while emissions are claimed to be approximately half the requirements of Euro 3.

No price has been announced, but the Integra is expected to arrive in showrooms in early 2012.

The rider takes a few dodgy looking lines, but the bike itself looks nippy and nimble enough doesn't it? The frugal aspect coupled to Honda's legendary build quality would seem a winning combo.
