Moto Guzzi 2009

MOTO GUZZI

A series of upgrades and facelifts from the troubled Mandello factory, which seems to have been suffering from factory support issues in terms of spares, distribution and marketing rather than from any particular issues with the bikes themselves. Indeed quality and reliability are impressive and the bikes generally are good to ride, while the Griso is one of the best looking motorcycles available today.

* Stelvio 4V TT

GuzziStelvioTT01Click on image for galleryDon’t be fooled by the name, the 4V Stelvio shares its engine - and all the valves - with the Griso 8V. Ask Guzzi to explain, not me... Whatever, where the stock Stelvio is pitched at BMW’s R1200GS, so the Stelvio TT targets the R1200GS Adventure with an increased off-road bias. This includes wire wheels with knobbly tyres, rugged luggage, handguards, sump and shaft protectors, crash bars and additional lights. It’s not yet clear if the suspension will be uprated and genuinely enhance the bike’s mud-pluggin potential or if this is all purely cosmetic.

* 1200 Sport 4V

Guzzi1200Sport01Click on image for galleryThe Sport is the last of the big Guzzis to have its old 4 valve engine replaced by the newer and more powerful 8 valve motor. So Guzzi has called it the 4V... Power is up from 94bhp to 104bhp and torque is up 3lb.ft to 77lb.ft, albeit further up the rev scale. The bike also gets new colours and various minor cosmetic changes.

One of my jammy neighbours just got bought the green and brown Griso. It is better in the flesh than the photos and it looks great in those.
.
If any factory deserves to do well then it surely is Guzzi, it is just a pity that they are being held back by some poor management at the sound of things.

I went on a Guzzi launch a couple of months ago, rode the Café 750 and also the Griso SE, though I'm not quite sure what they expect us to write about it, the only differences were the colours! I still think the black Griso is one of the best looking bikes available today, I love 'em.
I don't know how Guzzi keeps going, they're only making about 8000 bikes a year, that's not even close to being sustainable. Yet the bikes are good so it does come down to dreadful management.
