Touring through Scandinavia and the Baltic states - ideas?

Hi folks,
This June we're planning to ride from Blighty through France(via chunnel), Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland (to Stinky) and then back via Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland etc to home. Its going to be quite a weekends ride !!
Any suggestions of nice bits to visit, I'm thinking particularly of nice areas to ride, stunning scenery or just beautiful Police free curvy roads?
I've searched about and not found many blogs or suchlike to give many clues about touring these patches and although we'll have lots of cultural stops, I feel we both need some good twisties too?
Suggestions, comments, flames etc welcome.

It's all flat!
Go to Norway and focus on the Fjords.....

If you are doing Poland and Germany are you planning on coming here, Czech Republic too?

Thanks for you responses so far.
Kev - We're reckoning on some long dull days to blast through Belgium and Holland, partly due to previous visits, partly as they're more accessible for shorter trips so we can "do them" another time. I remember fondly some previous trip in that area south of Cologne.
Shuggie - Not planning to head that far south at the moment, we were kicking ideas about the North and running along the Baltic coastline for a while, but I'm open to suggestions?
Silvercub - we're meeting relatives in Helsinki, so thats the only fixed destination at the moment. So I think Norway is a non runner on this trip, unless we forget about the Baltic states?
Does anyone any experiences of general traffic/road conditions in Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania?
Travelled round Lithuania into Latvia round to Helsinki by way of St Petersburg, then over the sea to Estonia and back to Lithuania. Bad news it was all by train or bus so the knowledge of roads is limited.
Vilnius is pretty enough. Just looked at the tourism website. The skyscrapers are all new. The tourist choice is between The Gates Of Dawn or the worlds only statue to Frank Zappa. You will end up eating the burned stale bread cheese thing, but it's about as appealing as a pork scratching to a vegetarian. Who happens to be on a low fat low salt diet.
Going north the Hill Of Crosses is eerie. The nearby Siauliai is unremarkable other than a magnificent cinema. Loads of stained glass-no this is in the entry hall it wasn't some avant garde cinema with coloured patches flickering on the screen.
Up into Latvia, Riga is a vibrant port city. Larger and less twee than Vilnius it has a larger spread of building styles including some great communist era stuff. The TV/radio tower is awesome. There is an absolutely massive market possibly the largest in Europe. When I say it sells everything I mean everything. Up to and including machining tools and ships chandlers. Most tourists gather round the halls that were Zeppelin hangers.
3 day transit visas were easily available in Riga for travel to Finland through Russia. 3 days is not enough time to see St Petersburg but a taste is better than nothing. St Petersburg is on an imperial scale beyond anything seen.
Helsinki well you have relatives there.
Tallinn, at the time I went there appeared to be a place for Finnish people to go to for a weekend on the piss. Less than charitable but it was about taking foreign currency as quickly as possible. Full of brothels and casinos. whether you think it has improved or declined will depend on what you want on your journey as much as any changes.
What I do remember about the roads was they were quiet out of town. This was travelling north south not the major transits of east west. Lots of country, lots of Stork nests. If you do go see if you can find out what the little "Citadels" of garages are. Particularly noticeable going from Riga into Russia these groups of garages were a good bus ride from the nearest towns. A quick way round the five year plan for garage building? Please if you find out do tell.
Even then not many Russian vehicles outside Russia. Bikes; saw one chopped sidevalve Dneiper and a few MZs.
Forgot to say this was going back to 2002. So lots of changes. Even then big expenditure on the railways by the EU. No doubt similar happened with respect to the roads.

If you look on the UK BMW World of Tours website they have a tour through the Baltic States including Finland. You could crib their route?
The ferry journey from Stockholm to Helsinki is magical as the sun shines on the 1000 or so Islands. Great trip to do.

We took the ferry from Harwich to Eskberg then rode over to Copenhagen - then is a choice of more ferries or the Big Bridge to Sweden or Norway. I think there are ferries from Newcastle way as well.
This assumes your start is the UK!

RIC - yes we're South West UK based, so a £30 chunnel ticket sounds a good starting point, then a blast across the "flat bits" and time to enjoy Denmark, Sweden and Finland.
Has anyone gone up through North Finland to Sweden and across to Norway? I'm wondering as the SO has eyes for Norway more than the Baltic return route. Plans are subject to change all the way up until 1/6/11 I guess?

Captain Sponge: You need to check the weather for the north at the time of year you plan to go, the tourist office are reliable for advice - we had snow last June in Scandinavia.
Norway is sensational, both for spectacular BIG scenery, great roads and relatively low traffic. Colette Colemen, in her Great Motorcycle Journeys of the World, details a great route from the north to south of Norway.Plus you get an idea of daily distanc and possible destinations.
We use the ferry because it is overnight and gets you 'on station' within 12 hours or so of leaving home but we all have different ideas! If you take your accommodation and fuel/tyre savings by using the ferry it is about a wash in cost terms.

Captain who is not Scarlet,
I'll second RiC's recommendation, particularly as I was dismissive before(sorry!).
Head north from Stavanger and it's an exhilarating roller-coaster ride on excellent but demanding roads. The adrenaline rush is punctuated by exquisite ferry journeys. You'll experience the midnight sun and a quality of light that artists will die for.
Depending how far north you get (watch out for elk) return via Sweden, if you like forests & rallying, or do it all again and get a ferry to Shetland from Bergen. You will have to double the budget and fly to Helsinki, at a later date!
Blimey, looks like i'll have to change my summer touring plans now.....
WARNING: Sponge + Fjord = super saturation

Capt Sponge - as much as I like it here and there is some nice things to see I would have to say that given the alternatives you are considering that it may be better to stay up North and save this part for another year.

A note on tyre savings-be aware that the roads in Norway whilst being well surfaced are VERY abrasive-you can trash a pair of tyres very quickly over there.

I've spent some time in Estonia and it's really not a great motorcycle destination. It's mostly flat and there is a lot of forrest, so often times, you don't get to see anything. Tartu is a pretty enough University town and there is a small area of hills South East of there, but honestly, you'd be through it in half an hour. Tallinn old city is very nice though. You might fin your best bet is to try and hug the coast as best you can.
Hi Guys, Thought I would lend my pennies worth. I have travelled from South Uk to the North cape riding up the spine of Norway along it's hightest points. It is by far one of the most beautiful and exciting trips you can do without having to ship your bike abroad. Roads in Norway especially up north suffer from suface damage due to the vast changes in temperature from Summer to winter. expect to find pot hole and volcanic peaks. Roads are windy and fun with a number of ferry crossings. Costs for eating out are extreme ( 12" sub of the day = £12.50) However, fuel is around the same price and if there is more than one of you then you can share the numerous log cabins or camp sites which are good value.
Finland is largly flat with lots of elk especially around dawn and dusk. All the speed cameras ar forward facing so 2 fingers up as you speed through them. Scenery is nice with losts of lakes all of which have saunas and swimming which is great after a days ride. Good value and use the euro. Fuel prices ok and plenty of camp site. Lost of midges in the summer. Sweden, the roads are small with lovely scenery agian good camping and alittle expensive. The crossing over the main bridge to Denmark is done at 30 degrees into wind. Denmark, well really after all the above it's a quick bash through. Major cities to stop at would be Tromso in Norway, Copenhagen, Helsinki ( you can get a boat across to Tallin from here and do a short trip via eastern Europe but it is flat and not too enspiring) Before crossing over from Sweden visit Turku on a friday Pm where they have a massive bike meet every week.
Have fun.

Be sure not to hit a pothole near Helsinki or you'll disappear into Finn air

Chaps,
thanks for the comments and suggestions, we're almost sorted and heading out to the wilds of Europe soon, will provide an update and maybe pictures (probably from the start and end of each day and never of the pretty roads we find....).
Am looking forwards to getting a silly red nose "tan" from all of those endless days of sunshine........

On Belgium - The Ardennes has some nice swoopy roads in it, not been on the bike buy I did an epic road trip around Europe by car some years ago and that section stuck in my mind (it was before we hit the Belgian Beer too!)
I want to head off around Scandinavia by bike myself sometime, so looking forward to hearing how you get on!

Excellent! You may have just edged ahead of rocca in the pun stakes.
The missus rang last night after a disappointing client meeting in Helsinki: "Finns ain't what they used to be". Read into that what you will...

Well we went and did this tour, it was awesome.
We decided on the Ferry from Harwich to Esbjerg, a very civilized way to start and cost friendly as opposed to the previously planned blast through the flat bits. Denmark was very nice, the only improvement i'd suggest is a few more twisty roads, but that could have been our road choices?
Sweden was again lovely, with more trees and lakes, a pattern that was repeated in Finland. The local road users were desperately polite, very much focused on speed limits and it was very refreshing after our trip round the M25 to start the Tour.
After a great 4 day break in Finland, we then took a ferry to Estonia, got stuck in a very hot jam for too long and then once we escaped onto the Baltic highway it failed to register much. Strangely as soon as we crossed the border(such as it was) into Latvia our impressions changed and we really enjoyed the ride the views and Riga itself. We went off the beaten track a bit in Latvia and Lithuania and the roads were variable, thankfully the Enduro mode helped a lot and we learnt to love the European funding signs that meant good roads ahead.
Poland was next, and if the roads were iffy at times, the driving was just plain suicidal. Within 2 hours of crossing the border we had two near death experiences due to vehicles blindly overtaking and expecting anything coming the other way to drive off the road. Crossing into Germany we simply enjoyed the road surfaces and better driving. Our return journey allowed us to stay in the Spreewald, Harz "mountains", the Rhine valley and then the Ardennes before a Chunnel back to blighty.
All in all about 3,500 miles, two up on a beautiful multistrada, what a perfect touring bike.

Holland and Belgium aren't especially pretty, and I'm allowed to say that as my wife's Dutch. The Rhine Valley from Cologne south has proper fairytale German castles on hilltops and some of the most beautiful countryside in Germany. And all the rest is virgin territory for me, but I'd love to hear how you get on!
