Sidecars!

Having just returned to biking after a ten year break and having just read Jo Axons book 'sidecars' I wonder how much interest there is out there for sidecars for touring work currently etc? On the recent Ace Cafe London to Brighton Burn-up I saw some nice outfits parked on the seafront! Other than Motopod I have'nt heard of any new sidecar design/manufacturers in the UK? Is there still any interest in this different form of travel which I suspect may be an interesting way to undertake longer distance tours - any thoughts anyone?

Re: Sidecars!

As far as I'm aware the only sidecar manufacturer in the UK is good ol' Watsonian Squire, and they're doing okay in fact.

Re: Sidecars!

They aren't made in the UK and don't offer the sidecar bit separately, but among the outfits you've seen there could have been a Ural Dalesman, or one of the other Ural models. I have a (frankly barmy, but irrepressible) hankering after their Gear-Up model, and the Red October has an even better name (and paint job).

This is a dealer site, but very informative:

Re: Sidecars!

The trouble is that Urals appeal mainly to gentlemen of a certain age and taste. Meaning, I suspect, that one can probably be robbed - er, better make that "acquired" - secondhand off a retired vicar without spending too much money, if you keep your nose to the classifieds.

In a desperate rearguard action against my cravings I'm operating a policy of ramming the garage so full of junk that there's no room for more bikes. But it's probably a vain effort to stave off the inevitable...

What about a curveball? If you like sidecars, then you're obviously not shy and retiring, so how about a funky Spyder RT?

It swings into town with its humungo 777 litres of on bike storage. And its thoroughly modern with its ABS, Traction Control, Stability Control, Rotax (read: Aprilia 1000 v-twin) engine. Heck, it even giggles with semi-auto gearbox and trick reverse gear too! Looks a lot of fun and will get you noticed, whilst being practical too. Bit pricey mind. Still, cheaper than a Goldthing and bath-tub :-D

Fits all (loaded) wallets: http://spyder.brp.com/en-US/See/Can-Am/Showroom/Showroom-RT.htm

p.s. Kev, when are you going to test one in a group test with... erm, itself? ;-D

I've ridden the Spyder and like a lot of weird vehicles, it's less fun to ride/drive/whatever you call it, than it looks. I'll post the test on here shortly, just for you...

Re: Sidecars!

Getting back to the Ural. I am a bit worried now as it would appear I am getting to a crtain age, as I quite like them! Mind you I say that from afar having never ridden one. They have quite a cult following in this part of the world and they sure as hell can take some pounding. They do a couple of pretty funky special editions and are certainly interesting.

At the Elefantentreffen you will sidecars galore and variations on that theme that boggle the imagination. There was one last time I was there that they guy had turned into a fully enclosed sleeping box. I have a pic somewhere so if I can find it I shall post it up. The ingenuity and work in it was impressive.

My only direct sidecar experience however was in the Philipines a few years back as my friends family own of those sidecar taxi bike things that they have in abundance over there. It was bolted to the side of a 125 Yamaha and I drove it around for a short while. It was a pretty horrible experience as far as motorcycling is concerned and was the second most evil handling thing I have ever experienced. However as a laugh and life experience it was brilliant, not to many of us get to to drive one.

Re: Sidecars!

Sussex Police are trialling the Spyder, although it would seem to be an obvious fail in the "getting through narrow gaps in a hurry" stakes. I actually saw one on the road (not in police livery) recently, which suggests that there are buyers out there (unless it was a test bike, of course).

I can't think of any advantage this would have for the police, it goes through gaps like a car and has the weather and crash protection of a bike. This must surely be for publicity than any real consideration of using it.

And check out the toolbox that comes fitted on the back. Yes, it's that old Bolshevik revolutionary emblem - the piston and sickle.

You also get a shovel with these bikes - which could be useful for meting out instant justice to any members of the bourgeoisie who attempt to cut you up in their luxury Autobahnwagen (the revolution will proceed at a stately pace as you've only got 40 hp or so to play with).

This raises a point of some ire actually. How can Police forces get away with this sort of thing? I suppose it does have better luggage carrying capacity than a bike and to be fair I have seen a maniac here in Prague managing to get through some pretty tight gaps in the traffic on one BUT in the main all your points are on the nail. Also in Prague the Police have a Hummer !?! In the name of all that is holy, thos abominations should never have left the drawing board for anything but military. For a Police car that is used only in the city and a bloody big one at that, it is beyond belief. It certainly has generated publicity but not of the positive variety.

Re: Sidecars!

While touring Wales I saw a Trex going around Snowdonia at speeds that quite frankly where amazing..........but like the Canam to pricey! I will be interested to read Kev's Canam test though! My original thoughts were that a combo might be fun for the Dragon or Elephant rallies given the chances of dodgy weather or an extended tour of Europe (if it ever stops expanding!)ie, something to sling the camping gear into! I live in the eastend of London, Brick Lane, and seen a couple of the Russian combinations around recently - but the traffic is heavy here and my Hornet is superb for that sort of thing as I ride every day in London traffic.
The thing I find limiting for a combination is I would expect to tour four/five times a year but run around London traffic most days so a combo would really only be for long journeys - the red Ural is unusual in it own way and I think 'something different' keeps biking interesting and should be supported. The cops in the eastend are using those odd little three wheel scooters and seem to be thriving on them but of course the width is much less than a Canam - plus here they get the bus lanes to play in anyway! Interesting to see a post on sidecars can stimulate a far bit of interest anyway - I saw some nice looking Canam looking Chinese trikes for sale on EBay for £2000ish but assume they are
still not up to European expectations!

Mmm, I wonder if the Health & Safety bods are 'driving' the Spyder trials with the Police (3 wheels safer than 2). Could be a slippery slope if so.

Re: Sidecars!

I really think a Monkeystrada combi is the way forward.

Shuggie, you said you were contemplating a bit of extra tinkering over the winter.

Break out the angle grinder, large hammer and welding gear. Get to work on a subframe, whilst at the same time cutting this frankly useless boat in half.

A few nuts and bolts, a bit of angle iron and viola (as you would say: rocca, please supply the accent).

Could you possibly indulge me with a modification to the arm of the sidecar extension (it could then proudly carry the decal 'Monkeystrada Combi ARSE')? Insert a linch pin at the connection point (you can tell I'm a mechanic, can't you), run this to the handlebars with a length of baler twine and wind it a few times round the brake reservoir.

Should you ever have an irritating passenger or surplus cheese, simply pull the pin out, thereby simultaneously releasing sidecar and re-enacting perhaps the greatest scene in the history of claymation.

You can't say I lack persistence!

What is the current tally?

I'm having inexplicable cravings for a CB500/4. If I can just drag silverbrownie's still only partially revarnished mirror dingy (sic) to the bonfire, this will free up at least 4 bike spaces. I could possibly even stretch to a Ural Dalesman (with jerry can).

What was that about 'a certain age'?

... it might create a bit of banter by all accounts! Although I'd probably prefer to hear your Tiger 800 and Diavel verdicts once ridden.

Re: Sidecars!

Say - talking of a certain age (me 52) I am going up the Ace tonight with my woman and mate, he will have a 80yr pillion! Her name is Sybil and she used to go to the original Ace when sidecars were popular visitors there, she often frequented the Isle of Man in the 70's! She raced in the sidecar event once or twice and was mates with Dave Croxford and Wilhiem Wundt. This will be her first visit in thirty years and probably last! Her mate and her were know as the Hellcats in those days on the island and they travelled there on the, now old!, 750 Suzuki kitted out for touring!I met her when one day I was washing the bike and she wandered over and started chatting about bikes and the Island - at the time I did'nt know what to think of her...... but later that night she appeared at our place with loads of photos of the TT, her and mates plus the Ace etc. She will be travelling pillion on the back of a 1250 GTA Suzuki and we have kitted her out with leathers and helmet etc It never fails to amaze me the amount of very nice people I meet through the bike in one way or another - I hope there are a few sidecars up there tonight so I can get some good photos of her onboard.........lol.......funny old life!

Gutted today, as I spoke to a guy that had turned up at a bike shop with a vintage Ural, resplendent with not only a matching sidecar, but also (sat in the side car) two Weimaraner's looking cool in their 'doggles' eyewear. Would have made a great pic for this thread!

After much thought and reading the Can-Am report methinks to reverve Motopods advertising slogan to......... 'three wheels good, two wheels better'. Have to say having read all the above posts my hankerings around a combination of any kind have gone to the deepest reaches of my unconscious to be converted into something more creative! Watch this space...........lol!

Kev, could we please have a Del button to allow individual posters to remove their own accidental double save entries? I've noticed that even you yourself have accidentally double entered posts on some threads! cheers...

Re: Sidecars!

There ought to be one there, I'll, er, double check that...

My own double entries are deliberate in fact, a peculiarity of the software is that the very first posts in new threads don't appear in the recent comments box on the left, so I repeat the first one to make it show up there. There doesn't seem to be much we can do about that.

Back to you about the delete button shortly...

Re: Sidecars!

Hmm, it looks to me as if adding the delete button allows you to delete anyone's entry, which might be fun but isn't really in the spirit of things...

I'll have a word with zzrwood the Drupal guru and see if we can sort this. Meanwhile when I've spotted double posts I've been deleting the second one myself, so usually if you just leave it there it'll disappear after a while anyway.

Merlin sidecars in Pity Me, Co. Durham make amazing custom built sidecars. They look like something out of Star Wars.
