Ducati Panigale 1199

The Big One of 2012... I'm not going to get a lot of sympathy I know, but the schedule's a tight one, getting back to Heathrow from the GSX-R in Florida, hanging around in the airport for a few hours then jetting out to Abu Dhabi to ride the high tech Ducati. A fest of jet lag...
Plenty's been written about this already, but with Ducati staff up to the most senior level present on the launch, this is a chance to ask them - or get me to ask them - anything in particular that's bothering, puzzling or intriguing you.
Ducati 1199 questions here! I'm riding it on Feb 11 by the way.

Does the bike have to be split into three pieces to service the valvetrain?

Did they benchmark any other models when designing the 1199? (much in the way that BMW benchmarked the K5 GSXR1000 when designing the S1000RR)

It's a tough job but someone's got to do it... Poor Kev...
Ninou
1. Its low end engine response compared to the 1198?
2. can it be run down to 3,000 rpm (or lower)?
3. does it have "sorted" fueling, or will further mapping updates be required?
Thanks.

Sportsbike hat on:
1) Will it go fast?
2) Will it go faster than the BMW S1000RR?
3) Will it go faster than any other sportsbike?
Sportbike hat off:
1) Are the ergonomics better than the current ducati 848/1198?
2) Fuel consumption/range under normal road use?
3) Is the ABS any good? Is the TC updated?
Cheers!

Kevin.
How big was your smile when you rolled the throttle on in the intermediate gears?
Tank range after inducing smiles?

Where or if, can we expect to see the power unit used next?

Cheek question...
Do you have a GoPro or similar to post a 360º video and some onboard footage? Nothing fancy, just a taste of the action.

There's been a small change of schedule after a clash of dates, I'm now riding the 1199 on Feb 13 rather than the 11th, hence the review date is now February 15.

I have a GoPro on the way though it won't arrive in time for that. But Ducati often has a video crew and I'll see if I can get some footage anyway. I'm gearing up to produce more of that now, but I've had to find someone else to do the editing as it's so time consuming.

1) The bike produces a lot less power than the 1198 throughout most of it's rev range. Depending on how fast it spins up, does that make it feel flat or more manageable?
2) The more expensive model weighs more, how come?
3) Some think the stocker is going to be the better bike to ride; if you ride both, which did you prefer?
I had a few issues with my 916 over charging. I wonder what type of rectifier they use on the 1199.
Its a nice thing to look forward to - please seek this expert out that we met at the NEC show - she was knowlegeable and stunningly beautiful - and the bike was not bad either - Kev this is your build up to the Explorer experience which is very eagerly awaited for mere mortals

We all eagerly await Kevin's report, it'll be the most grounded I'm sure. However, some early feedback from Neevsy for those interested: http://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/News/newsresults/New-bikes/2012/Februa...

So, Kev... I guess you didn't like it huh? :-)

Grounded? I think he typed it with his left hand while he wanked with his right!
Seriously though, great bit of reading.... Gives the sense that Kevin was impressed enough that wanted to take his writing up a level to do justice to the new Duc.
This will be a classic review we'll go back and enjoy 20 years from now when the 1199 is a classic bike and we look back fondly to re-live a sportbike revolution.

Yeah, he got more carried away with the Diavel! ;-D
Diavel: "Phenomenal. Never mind starting this review with some background and building up to the conclusion, you have to know right now: the new Ducati Diavel delivers way beyond the most optimistic expectations. So much so, this is the most unexpectedly brilliant machine I´ve ridden for many years, and that's not simply because my expectations were low to start with – I always thought it was going to be fun – but because it handles superbly and is powered by the best engine Ducati has ever made."

I agree, one of the nicest reviews I've seen lately. Must be one hell of a bike for him to write such an enthusiastic review, not only covering all the relevant technical and dynamical aspects (as his usual reviews) but going beyond that (and adding a lot of words in that!).
Great to see reviews that are at the same time impartial but wrote by someone who seems to have a heart too, even if takes a Panigale to inspire them!

Hells teeth.

A condensed version of Kevin's review appears in this month's Forum magazine:
"Seductive...first willing girl...hard...skimpy red attire...stiff enough to...direct it accurately through curves.
Hardcore...massively...huge...colossal...crank. Distances and angles between the three fundamental shafts...feel and sensation...service...can suck...all fluids present......worth repeating.
Hot enough?...slip down...tease...let you have it in the end...a little foreplay...slide back...ready for you...wiggle your finger to slip it into.
Wood.
Gagging to ride...wrist-heavy...between your knees...hold tight with your thighs...while flinging it side to side...no grabbing......satisfaction is huge".
Phew.
Probably not the right time to mention it, but … photo 4: what a splendid helmet.

Nice review Kevin, I really felt like I was riding the bike whilst reading the review.
Captain Scarlet, I think the difference between the Diavel and the 1199 is the fact that for the Diavel there was no expectation, no one knew what to expect from it therefore the rave review and surprise, whilst for the 1199, a replacement for Ducati flagship model the expectation is huge and living up to it is indeed a success on it's own.
Motorcycling is most of the time more about passion than heart and reading Kevin review, the 1199 beats the S1000RR by a mile because the Italians bike is about flamboyance as well as technical, as the BMW is more German or more efficiency and technical side only.
On the performance side I believe that the Ducati will win hands down due to a better frame and less weight, if you remember in the 2006 Master Bike, Aprilia RSV1000R Factory won the contest due to the wonderful frame competing against much more powerful opponents. BMW I guess will be the same and only tracks where engine is everything, like Monza it will have a chance against the 1199.

It doesn't wheelie so readily coming out of turns, which is better for speed, the more forward weight distribution helps, but it's lower geared and carries a lot less weight, and the throttle response is very crisp too, it certainly doesn't feel flat.
The ABS adds about 2.5kg.
3) Some think the stocker is going to be the better bike to ride; if you ride both, which did you prefer?[/quote]
I only rode the S, but I don't why the stock one would be better, the suspension won't be quite as good, everything else is the same except the extra 2.5kg ABS, and if there are any of the electronics you don't like, you can switch them off. Also the S gets some additional aerodynamic spoilers on each side of the fairing which improve wind protection slightly.

Doh, I completely forgot to ask!

Maybe I overdid the imagery a little... Your version wasn't even condensed much.

Kevin. What did you judge the tank range?

I couldn't even guess except I don't think it'll be that great, to get those very wide and flat combustion chambers to burn dependably Ducati have to throw fuel at them in effect - the mixture is quite rich, which is why they have a secondary air bleed into the exhaust port, to burn off the remaining fuel before it reaches the catalyst, so it's not going to be especially economical. It might be that it's a lot better when being used gently, but it'll definitely be no NC700...
I've asked for a UK test bike so I can discover all that kind of stuff.
Tank range?
Who cares!
:-)

Kevin: No surprises then. It's a relief in some ways as it may be no good for those Alps and Dakar runs.
Enjoyed your review, very instructive and comprehensive, wish I was 18 again with no back troubles.......
Ducati deliver again. At a price.
Nice review and opened my eyes to all the features. I am glad it will be a bike to beat. I was worried about the frame issues with Rossi spilling over to the production bikes but then do we drive on the road at those type of speeds. Kevin dont worry about the rectifier, I only wonder about how the bike will last. I have done 37k on my 916 and wonder how the panigale will fare up to it. I guess modern bikes like cars are improving their electrics all the time.
