Ducati Multistrada MTS1200
Hi everybody,
My bike is supposed to be delivered this month! White S Touring
Could you please help with:
- stronger rear spring (Ohlins) part number- my dealer says it's not available anything like that and I know several of you fitted it; just couldn't find the post with the code...
- tyre pressure monitoring system? I would want to have it, is it available or still not?
- can't find the pics John W uploaded with the GPS connection (mine is Zumo 220), any suggestions highly appreciated
Thanks!
Hi CCM,
According to my notes, the stock spring is 85Nm and the heavier, 100Nm spring is part no: 21729-34 - hope that helps. BTW, lots of good MTS info on Andy W-Inuk's site: http://www.motorcycleinfo.co.uk/index.cfm?fa=contentGeneric.wuyjdrgpolhd...
Richard
CCM tell your dealer to go look at the parts list, its quoted on there !
Also, the parts list for the Ohlins TTX damper gives it too.
Somewhere much earlier in this thread I quoted the number and price.
Here is a link to it (see page 4 for spring, giving part number for optional spring)
http://www.motorcycleinfo.co.uk/resources/6795/assets/images/Ducati_MTS1...
You will probably need an ohlins agent to fit the spring for you (I tried and couldn't get the spring off, so had to take it to my dealers - P&H Crawley - who did it free of charge for me).
It was only 70 odd GBP. Previously when fully loaded the bike was underspung, and the new stiffer spring transformed the bike for us.
Cheers,
John.
Thanks Techno and John!
I rarely ride two - up, and I'm about 95 kg with gear, do you think I'll (absolutely) need to upgrade to the stiffer spring?
I couldn't find any novelties about the tyre monitoring system, suppose it's history?
Cheers,
John et al; on the brake problems I am wondering if slightly thicker pads, if available, may help the situation. Bled my rear brake this spring (as per Andy's info pages, thanks Andy) and went from absoluting useless to being able to now engage the ABS, albiet with standing on the pedal. At least it is of some use, and has been holding up to some degree. The problem does seem to be with master cylinders, however even after a bleed the performance is still not there...
CCM; Still using the stock spring and seem quite happy with it. Guess I would have to experience the stiffer spring to make a decision to change. I'm 97kg w/ gear and mostly ride solo with full load. The longer I own this bike the more agressive I become, and now using all the rear tire. The bike handles superbly for me and don't believe I have ever bottomed out. DT
@pdm-dk - well, Audi's track record with Italian (and British) exotica is pretty good so far: In Lamborghini's case, their cars seem just as utterly mad as before, only now you can hiccup whilst in one without the dash falling apart. I'm assuming that the AMG-badged Diavel might rapidly become a collector's item - I can't imagine it'll be around for long!

That makes us (roughly) similar weights - my stock, me-only, preload setting on the standard spring is 14/16, going to 16/16 as soon as I add any luggage (or for a track day). Even if I only ever rode solo, I'd probably still change the spring, as the suspension will always work that bit better when it's more in the centre of its operating range, rather than close to its limit. One thing I really, really miss on the MTS is the ability to alter rear ride height independently of preload - that's made all the difference on my other Ducatis and it's a feature I'd love to see added.
Ccm, I weigh a lardy 108kg without gear.
I used to ride using rider + pillion just on my own.
Fully loaded the bike would porpoise in high speed bends. Bottoming out was only an issue if hitting a bump mid corner.
Now I ride the correct settings, and it rarely bottoms out, although I do occasionally have the stand and pegs on the ground (solo or two up).
personally, of your north of 15 stone I would think the spring would make a noticeable difference.
If your lighter than that, you might find the ride too hard.
The tyre pressure monitoring kit never materialised, but you can fit the optional accessory that was offered on the previous multi (don't know anyone who has done this).
Cheers,
John.
Kev / anybody else,
any news on the grapevine about model updates to the MTS1200 for next year ?
Just thought I'd ask, as it will have been out 3 years come April next year.
Cheers all,
John.
Apparently it will be shaft drive and a LC boxer engine so it can gain share , that's down to BMW/Audi rivalry . Times change!

Wow, three years, where the hell has that time gone? I've not heard anything about the facelift model changes, maybe we'll see something in EICMA Milan this year, although it could be the sort of thing they'll show in Intermot Cologne, which is the beginning of October - suddenly the German show will be a lot more important to Ducati with its new masters... Major new models will still appear in Milan but interim stuff like an updated Mutley could well appear in Cologne now.
Ducati has been noting information on this very thread by the way, both the UK importer and the factory itself, so if you see a firmer rear spring and an innovative working rear brake, you can pat yourselves on the back.
How about improved aerodynamics Kev?
Yup, that's garnered plenty of comment too. There could also be space for more power and torque with an improved exhaust, the Diavel has exactly the same engine but 10bhp more entirely because its exhaust flows the gas better.
Easier (motorised?) adjustability of the screen would be good, and some little winglets like the GS/Yamaha Tenere...as Rob O says, to improve aerodynamics. The Multistrada is one noisy/windy bike!
Better quality finish wouldn't go amiss...it's a premium bike after all, and better hydraulics, both for the clutch and rear brake. Perhaps the new semi-active Öhlins suspension, and variable ABS depending on mode.
I guess the more we think about it, the more improvements we can all think of. Basically, it is already a cracking bike, with several niggles to iron out. I'm sure they will make some progress to make it better.
Hmm, flat twin, no thanks ;-)
Yep 3 years (well 2 and a bit so far) have rocketed by.
I'm wondering simply so I can prime the wife to expect a bike change if the model changes. She has said she does not want me to get any other bike as she likes the MTS, but a newer version of what we have might be doable :-)
My wish list:
- A working rear brake would be good (actually essential).
- Better front stoppers would be good too (monoblocs like the Diavel etc).
- Better aerodynamics is a must, because this bike is sending me deaf !
- HID headlights too, if they can manage it.
My nice to have list:
- Electric screen would be nice, but I can live without it.
- Tyre pressure monitoring would be good too (bring it in line with other sports tourers like the BMW K GT).
Might have to have a jolly to Milan again this year to see whats what.
Yup, that's garnered plenty of comment too. There could also be space for more power and torque with an improved exhaust, the Diavel has exactly the same engine but 10bhp more entirely because its exhaust flows the gas better.
My understanding is that the Diavel airbox is considerably larger than the MTS current box and the MTS has no spare space to accommodate a larger one
A change to the aerodynamics would transform the long distance performance as would improved tank range.
A better front brake would be good as would a lower price.....yes,it would.
Actually, a bigger fuel tank would be good too... 22-24 litres would probably suffice. Enough to give a genuine 200 mile range at motorway speeds. Typically I would get around 176 mile to the tank if cruising at around 70-80mph. That or better fuel economy... ;-)
I'll add my wants:-
Better aeros I'm going deaf !
Better rear brake
Better fit and finish of pannels
Better lights on High beam.
Other than these items I'm pretty happy
Allright, here are some of my "wants"
No shaft drive
No motorrised screen
A bit lighter
More Ducati stickers.
Better Sound out of the box. (Original Sound is pathetic)
Better tires from new. ;)
Focussing on the most important things to have:
1. MUCH better headlights
2. A working rear brake
3. Better tank range (however achieved)
4. Overall improved fit and finish
Hi guys,
750 km with my MTS Touring, and a bit confused (after 8 years with the GS I believe it's not a big surprise!)
Engine: I was surprised about the vibes under full throttle but also at steady speed, much more than I expected, actually my GS vibe more only over 160 kmph.
Noise: a lot. Touring screen in medium position the best compromise, but I think it's more than my GS with Adventure screen. Changed the helmet from system 5 to system 6 and there is a significant improvement, but there is definitely too much noise. Turbulence from screen is better than the GS.
Gearbox: on my bike, until now, it is a DISASTER! I have lots of false neutrals between all gears and it always clonks at a change; I don't think it's normal, what did you experienced with the 'box?
Otherwise usual complaints about the poor panel fit, some heat from the engine but nothing catastrophic, and Givi's are poor compared to BMW boxes. Oh, and I find a bit difficult to get used with the key-less i-drive of Ducati, would prefer the classic arrangement, but I'll get used of course.
Cheers,
C

Sorry for the triple post!
CCM. It often happens when there is a delay in the server and you question if you've send the response. Tip: If I do, I usually just select Edit on the repeated posted, delete all the text, just leaving 'double-post' or something.
Howdy CCM; Personally really haven't noticed to much of a vibe problem. It is a big twin so some should be expected, however it does get smoother with age... I do notice some vibes in the mirrors at speed, but don't find it at all uncomfortable on long rides.
Noise, GET SOME GOOD EAR PLUGS, or try to find a screen that suits you. Lots of screen comments on this thread. I am using the MRA touring vario, and definitely an improvement over stock, but still not ideal. Also using System 6 canister.
Geeze this is the best tranny I have had on either of my previous Duc's, it could improve with age as well? Does sound a bit odd though as very few or nil complaints in that department yet. Good luck. DT
CCM. When I first used my bike, after GS ownership, I rode it at low revs on the torque like a GS. Then I used the revs and it transformed the bike into an addictive fun machine. So experiment with the revs and gear choice, top is a very high gear, for instance , and the engine torque will drive the bike happily at low revs but it will be better in 5th at higher revs.
The gearbox never hit false neutral for me and was pretty slick but did improve with miles.
Wind noise a real pain. MRA double X touring helps, at a price!
I love my Multi. 18,500km in about 18 months. I would really like it to have cruise control. All the sensors are there and it has a fly by wire throttle already. As far as I can tell all it needs is a little more software and an 'on' switch. My numb right hand and aching wrist would be very grateful for a rest.
I have had a few false neutrals but I use heavy boots most of the time. I am thinking of another bike to replace my RT , the BM is just an old motor after the Multi. There is a lot to improve on this bike in fit and finish, n Australia they sell for $32,000 US dollars and I can't really say they are a value machine, but they are engaging and additive!

Lets hope they don't look too much into Ducati, or we will end up with "Ducati - Das Motorrad" (Borrowed from VW, but same company basicly). :)
Maybe just get a speed nipple, think I will.
