I've got a few days riding planned with a friend. We are meeting up in Lyon with a vague plan to ride the Route Napoleon from Grenoble to Nice on Day 1, then have a day ride from Nice and back the next day before then heading back to the Chamonix area via the Route des Grandes Alpes, taking 2 days to cover that.

However, does anyone have any advice on alternative routes that might be better that those, or a road we simply should not miss?

Many thanks

That's an area i rfequent so can assure you that what you've got planned is fine.
If you have time, take the road from Briancon to Nyons, the D94.
That is one hell of a biking road too.
It's the road which heads west towards Avignon.

+1 on the D94 - If you get to Nyon then the road around Mount Ventoux can be fun at the right time, as well as the roads to the north and east of it back through to Sisteron (D40 D 542 D546 and more). There's also a great road through the gorge to the east of Ville sur Auzon, a little to the south. And then there's the food and wine...

Aahhh - to be in the south of France on a bike...

ZZR, too true. All 3 routes up and down Ventoux are great. Pretty wild in places though! L'alpe D'Huez is scenic but too twisty and slow for what i like.
Have you done that one?

Haven't done the L'alpe D'Huez but it sure looks interesting - though it looks like it might have a few "Don't look down!" stages. I will be in the area this time next year so will keep it in mind.
