BMW K1600 GT/GTL

Well sat on the bikes at the NEC show, they are sizeable, plush, planet crushing machines. Appear well styled for the genre. Massive wheelbase and size compared to Shuggiemac's Monkeystrada. The K1300 seems small in comparison.
Production bikes arrive in the UK mid March, with fully loaded GTL pushing £21k and GT £20k so base bikes at £17/18 ish......prices will not be confirmed until late Feb.
The design seems well thought through with lots of clever detail - it is a full fat tourer that the BMW staff claim will handle and do the twisties! All the girls who sat pillion loved the comfort and view beyond the rich riders so BMW have done their research well
Bling and heavy Bling is on its way in 2011 with 6 cylinders.

Press review is in the first half of February, somewhere in South Africa. Interesting indeed, those prices are higher than I was expecting

Will you be buying RIC? And will you be trading the strada?

El Capitain: Can't resist 6 cylinders once in my life....but the MTS is a keeper,it ticks most box's for me except the 6 cylinder one.
The Big K is Big so I'm not sure about those uphill tight hairpins or the 43 or so 'U' turns on the Stelvio. It will be uber stable at speed and looking at the engineering design my guess is the weight is low and mass centred so on the move it should be OKish.
But it is on order for March delivery with a rideout to Adalucia for Easter in April as I did not get an invite to the wedding!

Re price. Maybe the no frills standard bike will be lower at say £14ish but the BMW guys did not disagree that fully loaded with out agropovich it would be £20/21k.
But we don't know, have to see in Feb.

Well congratulations, as going by the YowToob videos it flows gracefully like a Bentley and is probably as relaxing as a gentle massage, soothing your glutes all the way to Adalucia I'm sure. Although I do hear used Wings, Rune's, Valkyries, Benneli Sixes and CBX6's are a tad more affordable!
Glad to see the mutley-struddle is a keeper. I'll need to keep taping yourself, John, Stagecoach, Monty et all for tips post buying mine - that is, if I don't get too carried away with myself and order a carbon red Diavel first! Actually wouldn't a small sticker of Dick Darstardly's Mutley with Mutley-Strada scripted underneath it, be a good addition to a black rat (get out of jail free card) sticker on the screen! ;-D Although a Monkey-Strada one would be top notch too!
Kate used to have a thing for old Scarlet, so she's already sent my invite, sealed with a royal quedge! ;-D

Just been looking at the specs on the GTSE/LE versus the standard bike. If the full fat version is £21k then the accessories of radio,e-suspension,swivel headlight,sat-nav prep, central locking, top box, Sky Sport, pipe holder and ashtray probably add up to £4k or £5k so the base bike will be £15/£16 which, I would guess, compares to the next bike down,an RT, at £12,500 or £15k loaded.
As Cilla would say 'a lorra dosh' !
No wonder the stands were big at the NEC

Sky Sport... it has cable TV then... must be a difficult to drive around pulling a cable though.
That thing is car with two wheels... central locking, electric windows, ash tray??

The low speed steering on all the funny front end BMWs is exceptionally good. The 1300GT can be heeled over around a hairpin and it just sits there on the line absolutely stable, and I'd expect the 1600 will be the same.

Mr KA : That's good to know, problem is it is so long it needs an articulation joint between the wheels!
Seriously though if you get back to the show take a look at the bike assembly as it really does seem as though they have tried to centralise the mass. Small examplple is the battery which is positiond just below the seat - you can see the cover - which on the K1300 is located on top of the petrol tank in a forward position.

BatuKaMan: There is a satellite dish on the topbox, clever the Germans. The sound Bluetooths into the Helmet headset and the picture appears in the SatNav screen. BMW have provided cruise control so the rider can concentrate when watching Das Boot.Honest I cannot tell a lie.

If it has Sky Sport than I've already found a flaw. It must have a beer dispenser as well when screen is tuned in Football or Rubgy.
The possibility of turning the satellite dish into a Sail would also make the BMW the first petrol/wind hybrid bike in the world.

This vid link, halfway through, has an engine/gearbox shot with cut outs showing internals. It is a big lump and difficult to see how it only weighs 102 kilo but German alluminium is light

Apparently the entry level bike is to cost £14950 which is equivalent to a K1300SE according to BMW staff 'in the know'.
They claim a lot of Adventure GS's leave the showrooms north of £20k - just amazing to me, so the full fat K1600 at £21k is expected to sell.
I spoke to my local dealer yesterday and he said more or less the same thing. Very interesting. Given that the base model comes with a fair bit of kit as standard then that's not bad. UK dealer launch is March the 19th. I'm looking forward to having a nice close look and a test ride.
I ordered one last week for delivery at launch (or thereabouts) to replace 1300GT. The GT SE version with ESA and "Preps for nav" options is shown as £18125 on my invoice with a note saying all figures to be confirmed.

BMW have announced prices in Canada which convert to £15820 for the GT and £17873 for the GTL.
So the £2000 premium for the GTL makes some sense, radio £1k,top box £0.5k, seat, chrome, screen and pipe holder £0.5k

1k for a radio !!! Bloody hell are they supplying it stuffed full of cocaine?

No cocaine is on the accessories list. Apparently BMW market research concluded a Nut Brown and a puff of Old Shag would suffice for the expected age profile of K riders.

How do you judge performance from figures? The K1600 has 0.5nm of torque per kilo which compares with the MTS at 0.53nm so does that suggest the Big K will be nearly as fast in gear as the mighty MTS?
There is a big debate elsewhere about torque and gear ratios concluding the 6th gear, of the K, is an overdrive, how do you work that out?
I presume bhp is a measure of speed at higher revs and gear ratios are used to aid acceleration where torque is low but all the Christmas calories fuzzes the grey matter.
Not sure yet about the new K1600's performance, but here are some figures of the K1300GT vs MTS:
1. 0-200kmh - 9.0s vs 10.1s (K vs MTS)
2. 100-180kmh - 7.1s vs 9.2s
3. Top Speed - 256kmh vs 237
IMO, the new K1600GT won't be faster than the K1300GT. Same hp, slightly more torque BUT weighs an additional 70LBS!

The GT does have a little more horses and torques than the MTS, but it is also significantly heavier, so I would have thought given probably similar gearing for a similar top speed, the MTS would have been close performance wise, especially in point 2 where the MTS feels particularly strong. Are you sure those figures aren't for the much lighter K-S? Where are the figures from?
I think you are right the six won't be faster than the GT4, it's made for serene smoothness. The YouTube vids show it gliding like a Bentley Coupe, whilst sounding like two Triumph 1050's being ridden together, exuding a noticeably loud gear whine whistle. Quite a satisfying sound by all accounts.
I keep a log of test results but not their origin. Just pulled a few examples and yes the figures were for the GT rather than the S model. Infact, the GT is not significantly heavier than the S once you pull the bags off. It has lower gearing, hitting top speed in 6th gear and better lower rpm engine response making top gear roll-ons remarkable for such a big bike - probably equal or better than the S up to twice the speed limit. The limiting factor of K models is the clutch, which hinders standing start (1/4 mile) performance - nobody will be doing standing starts with these bikes anyway.
The MTS on the other hand, while significantly lighter, has taller gearing, reaching top speed in 5th. In addition, its aerodynamics are far from ideal. IMO, this hurts its roll-on and top speed performance. Just look at how much faster the Streetfighter is. But how fast does one need to go on this kind of bike?
Cheers and enjoy. I'm sure you will be riding your MTS in the Smokey Mountains/Blue Ridge Parkway once Spring arrives.
IMO, BMW should have made a lighter K1600GT along with the GTL. While the K1300GT handles well, it IS a heavy bike and isn't ideal/fun for really tight stuff. The K1600GT will be significantly worse. I will obviously test one - its 6 cylinder engine will really have to win me over before I give up the K13.

" probably equal or better than the S up to twice the speed limit"
... Fair comments, in the main. My own experience was that I rode a GT back to back with an S on exactly the same route and the S felt noticeably quicker and was much more aerodynamic producing less buffeting, as well as having it's agility benefits. It must be lighter even without the GT panniers fitted because of it's smaller fairing. And speed tests ought to be conducted in the spec sold (with panniers, else we might as well add them to the KS or remove the mirrors from the GT, etc)) which hits more air and weighs more. Isn't the KS 175 bhp and the GT a smidgeon less too? The clutch is certainly crap! :-D
Just 'how' much faster is the unfaired Streetfighter then? I saw just over 150 on the clocks of the MTS and it might have gone a bit faster but I'd have missed my turn off! It didn't feel slow getting there either. And to qualify that my daily ride, and what I rode to the dealer on, was a well used S1000RR. I.e. I'm not saying it's got a better engine or is faster than the K1300S (which I owned prior to the SRR) or the race rep because very obviously it hasn't all all counts. But my seat of the pants data logger still told me that there was much in it with the slower (than S) GT, particularly in the ever useful 50-90 mph real world mid-range. Maybe I'm wrong though, because I probably changed gear at around 70 percent of the available range and didn't redline them down a drag strip, which might have produced a different result.
I don't see the K16 as a K13 replacement. I see it as a K12LT-SE replacement. It's not about being the fastest lardy tourer, it's about being the most sophisticated. I.e. E.g. You don't see Honda panicking to get their Goldwing on a slim fast power gain plan, because that's not it's intended target audience, and yet it must achieve it's set sales figures, else they would change it. BMW want a slice of that pie. And talking of pie, over here in the land of the cardiac arrest luncheons performance over 70 mph is largely superfluous and so comfort and refinement is much more important, I'm actually bored asking Americas how big their engines are to be told in response 'oh it's a V6/V8' and when further elaborating on the cubic capacity they look a little baffled. K13 embarrassing agility might be very important to Brits, but I think BMW hopes to sell shed loads more in countries that just don't care about that and are more interested in the '6' kudos and clever angling lighting. This all said, maybe the handling, like the Wing, will defy it's spec. They have, after all, done some trick thinks like made the front of the frame/headstock area a magnesium hybrid mix, added a very handy looking frame and are getting far better at producing what people are 'asking' for rather than what they 'think' people want. It's a strange a brave new world - BMW producing a bike capable of WSB podiums and Ducati's best global selling being a trail styled road bike - whatever next, a flat-tracker from Royal Enfield! ;-D

MP1300/Captain. I am sure the Big K is targeted at it's biggest markets and the UK is probably their 4/5th market with the USA at number ONE.Your point about the USA approach to life below 70mph is well made and Americans will take comfort over outright speed in general -- Hogs with 1800 cc or so and 70 bhp..........
Regarding BMW's evolving design approach they have cottoned on to mass centralisation, the S1000000RR is a good example, and I can see clues in the K1600 v. K1300. The battery is positioned on top of the tank just behind the headstock on the K1300 but on the K1600 is central below the seat plus the fuel is low as well. The rider position appears further back with the engine/rider either side of the centre point but the wheelbase is long. The use of magnesium sub-frames in high cantilevered assemblies indicates their mass centralisation sensitivity.
However the overall weight must make it self felt, handling wise, compared to lighter bikes but it will be interesting to find out how it handles.Mass centralisation makes a big impact on hiding weight - ride a modern FireBlade and it 'feels' about 100 kilo; not 200.
Your point about wind resistance and it's impact on performance is an issue at speed and the MTS suffers with it's Donny Darko mirrors and hand guards but I think the gear ratio's are OK. By the way when I put a top box on a car the extra wind resistance reduced mpg by 8% !

The torque per kilo of the K1300 is 0.46nm torques per kilo which compares with the K1600 at 0.5nm per kilo. This is wet weight comparison so the K1600 may be faster ignoring gear ratio's and other stuff like wind resistance.
Bike Magazine has just published a Sport-Touring comparison which "finally" includes the K1300GT - now that it's been discontinued!! Anyway here are their findings:
1. 1/4 mile - 11.12/131.3mph
2. top speed - 161mph
3. 40-120mph (in top gear) - 11.55sec
4. Braking 70-0mph - 51.2m
From their 1/4 mile time, it's obvious they had trouble launching the bike from a dead stop, due to the lousy clutch BUT look at the trap speed of 131.3mph - a good indicator of hp.
Bike Mag was blown away by its performance. It actually made 148hp on the dyno - more than a 2003 GSX-R1000!
Anyway, these figures will be hard for the new K1600GT to beat IMO. But one can only hope...

Just got the accessories price list. Akrapovic slip ons £1645. Top case £770. ipod lead a bargain £7.60. SatNav £580 ( the 660 is £420 discounted on e-bay ) Press ride confirmed as Feb 27th/28th in South Africa and Feb 29th for independent journalists.

Well BMW will make big Bucks on the accessories - the IPod cable is listed at £42.96 and all the chrome plastics on the GTL add to £500.
Good marketing as usual from BMW - the base bike will have an acceptable entry price tag but 80% of buyers will go for Bling and more Bling.

This is a vid of K1600 production line, plus GS adventure and at the end S10000000RR.
The impression is that a lot of care is taken during assembly with ,as is typical of BMW, statistical analysis featuring on key assemblies.
The Big K is almost solid metal and plastic, very complex.
During GS assembly they grapple with the huge wiring loom - makes you think that bikes working at all is a miracle!
