The 2012 YZF-R1 is the first production Yamaha to be fitted with a race-type traction control system!

The new model is updated with a selection of changes, including an optional 50th Anniversary paint scheme, but it’s the traction control which is the most significant.

The system, which Yamaha says is developed from that on its M1 MotoGP bike, has six levels of intervention, and as with other advanced TCS on rival superbikes from BMW, Ducati and Kawasaki, it monitors front and rear wheel speeds along with other parameters and when spin is detected, power is modulated via the fly-by-wire throttle system. It’s also possible to switch the system off.

The new bike also has three engine map functions with a newand remapped ECU, designed to improve low and mid-range controllability in particular. Yamaha says this improves roll-on acceleration and drive out of low speed corners.

Other changes include a new top yoke designed to enhance the apppearance and air of quality of the bike, footrests revised for improved feel, a redesigned front fairing for better aerodynamics and a cleaner style, LED running lights and new, hexagonal silencer end caps.

The R1 remains the only four-cylinder machine with a cross-plane crankshaft (full explanation here)
